Eni, Generative Bionics Partner on Industrial Humanoid Robotics

The companies will evaluate humanoids for inspection, teleoperation and other industrial tasks while also exploring robot materials, computing and testing.

MILAN — Italian energy company Eni and Generative Bionics will explore using humanoid robots for inspection, teleoperation and other industrial work under an agreement that could give the robotics startup access to Eni facilities for future testing.

The companies signed a memorandum of understanding  earlier this week (Italian-language source) covering several areas of potential cooperation around Generative Bionics' GENE.01 humanoid platform. The agreement calls for analysis, experimentation and evaluation rather than an announced robot deployment.

Potential applications at Eni sites include inspection, teleoperation, remote assistance and work in complex environments. The companies plan to evaluate whether humanoids could improve operational safety and efficiency, Eni said.

Eni may also make industrial sites available for future robot production, assembly and testing. The agreement does not identify a facility, timetable or number of robots involved.

Another part of the collaboration focuses on the hardware itself. Eni's chemicals business, Versalis, and its subsidiary Finproject could work with Generative Bionics on lighter and more durable materials for GENE.01, particularly its foot and shoe system. The companies will also examine potential industrialization and commercialization of sensor-equipped footwear developed by Generative Bionics.

Computing is another possible area of cooperation. Eni said it will evaluate providing its high-performance computing capacity to support development, training and validation of physical-AI models for Generative Bionics' humanoids.

GENE.01 is the Genoa-based startup's humanoid platform for industrial applications. Generative Bionics describes the platform as combining tactile, force and vision sensing, while its technical direction grew from robotics research at the Italian Institute of Technology.
The company has made a digital model of GENE.01 publicly available for simulation and development. Neither company has announced a commercial robot order or confirmed that GENE.01 is operating at an Eni site.

The Eni relationship predates the new agreement. Eni Next, the energy company's venture capital arm, invested in Generative Bionics in December 2025. Eni's 2025 annual report also lists Generative Bionics among companies in which Eni Next holds an equity interest.
