But not anymore for the people of Hong Kong! And that’s because this futuristic idea is about to become a reality there. Soon, you’ll see a robot serving you at a 24-hour convenience store.

Wondering where this convenience store is exactly located? This new robot-powered store is located at the Hung Hom waterfront area in Hong Kong. This small capsule-style store will use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics to offer customers a new type of shopping experience.

Meet Xiao Gai: The Robot Store Manager

The main attraction of this unique store is a humanoid robot named Xiao Gai. This robot was developed by a Beijing-based robotics company called Galbot. Xiao Gai is based on Galbot’s G1 humanoid robot model. The robot is around 5 feet 7 inches tall. That’s actually equal to the height of an average adult human. And just like humans, this robot has an upper body and two arms, along with sensors and cameras. These sensors and cameras allow Xiao Gai to see and understand objects around it.

This robot is designed to perform multiple tasks within the store. From picking up products and arranging them on shelves to helping customers and even managing checkout operations, Xiao Gai can do it all. And the best part is that it can understand voice commands and can deal with customers in multiple languages. Now that’s something super useful for local people as well as tourists from around the world. 

A Small Store With a Big Idea

This robot-operated convenience store is not like a big traditional shop. In fact, it’s a compact capsule-style structure that’s around 97 square feet. Though the store is relatively small, it still offers a variety of products. You’ll find snacks, lifestyle items, drinks, and even over-the-counter products, etc. 

The store’s capsule shape allows it to fit into busy urban areas where it’s actually hard to build and maintain big shops. This store will operate 24/7, and customers will be able to shop whenever they want. And they won’t even need to depend on human staff. Thanks to the store’s humanoid robot. 

Hong Kong, as we all know, is a global city where the tech sector is quite strong. The introduction of this robot-powered convenience store is one of the major steps towards involving AI in our day-to-day lives. This project is supported by the Hong Kong Investment Corporation (HKIC). They believe that AI can surely help create new opportunities and that it’s a great way to make technology more useful in daily routine tasks.

As per the officials, the goal is not only to create a new shopping method. In fact, their aim is to help people experience and understand modern AI technology in a real-world environment. Humanoid robots are not like those traditional machines. Rather, these robots work in the same place where humans work, too. These robots can use their hands and move around spaces. Not only this, but they can also communicate with people.

But it is worth noting that experts still believe that these humanoid robots surely face some challenges. For example, these robots do need advanced software and reliable hardware, plus, of course, much more speed to operate properly. If they have all this, only then can they fully replace humans in industries and warehouses, etc.
